The United States Women's Football League is pleased to announce that the West Virginia Wildfire will be resuming play in 2019 and maintaining their membership with the USWFL. Based in Charleston, West Virginia, the Wildfire are the only women's football team to call the Mountain State home.
“I’m excited to see them get back on the field. They have some great talent in that area!” Johnson said
Having kicked off in 2008, the Wildfire played their inaugural season as a member of the National Women's Football Association (when they were called the West Virginia Wonders). After the NWFA folded following that season, the WIldfire took a two-year hiatus from play before joining the USWFL for the 2011 season (back when it was still known as the Women's Spring Football League). The Wildfire have been perennial contenders in the USWFL, winning two 8's National Championships (in 2012 and 2013) and most recently advancing to the 2017 USWFL Ironwoman National Championship. During their 2018 hiatus, the Koontz family sold the Wildfire to veteran player Jackie Rea, and needless to say, she is excited to have the Wildfire picking up where they left off.
"I wanted to keep the Wildfire team alive for years to come," Jackie said, reminiscing about why she purchased the team. "I've absolutely enjoyed playing for the Wildfire, and our teammates have so much heart-we believe we can pick up right where we left off!" Jackie further stated how she was looking for more new players to pick the team up where they'd left off. "Time to prove we've still got it."
The Wildfire will certainly have an opportunity to prove they've still got it; in addition to renewing old rivalries with the Tri-Cities Thunder, Detroit Pride and back-to-back defending D2 National Champions Washington Prodigy, the Wildfire are set to enjoy new battles with the likes of the Winchester Tyrants, Virginia Venom and other USWFL teams to be announced. As Jackie said, the team is ready to prove they've still got it, and is FOCUSED on winning their third National Championship!
The Wildfire is holding tryouts for the 2019 season on Sunday, November 18 from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM at Shawnee Park, 2000 West Virginia Route 25 in Dunbar. Come be a part of the reborn flame set to blaze through the USWFL once more!
